DAY 1 (SAT): Arrival - Kihei

Arrival day – You are landing into the tropical haven of Kahului (OGG) airport on Hawaii’s beautiful Maui island. It’s not far to get you to your accommodation where you can meet the team and your fellow travelers.

It’s a busy day for our team as we ensure everyone arrives safely, are checked into their room, and familiarize themselves with the local area. Let’s meet in the evening for an informal gathering and a chat before the fantastic adventure ahead!

DAY 2 (SUN): Kihei

Let’s start the tour the right way with our tour orientation at the accommodation. This will take about 45 minutes as we understand each day of the trip, how Bamboo works with the local community, culture and marine life, and, most importantly, how YOUR contribution is going towards raising awareness and supporting our projects in Hawaii.

Then we’re off and get straight to it with quite possibly the best way to see the island via canoe! Observe sea turtles, eagle rays, dolphins, and more on a Canoe tour of Maui. We then get our hands dirty as we get stuck into the first community-based project that supports the development and well being of the local marine life. Rounding off the day with a deeper understanding of marine life by visiting the local NOAA center, where humpback whales are known to breach, and hopefully with our beach clean up efforts they will be visiting us for many years to come!

All of this before lunch! Say what!?

We then stop for a beachside picnic for a much-needed rest before we embark on our first beach clean of the tour! After everything you have seen and learned so far, we know you will be eager to help support these beautiful islands and her marine life!

After a full-on day, let’s settle down for an evening welcome meal together accompanied by some traditional live Hawaiian music! Mahalo!

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

DAY 3 (MON): Kihei

As some of you may know, we not only protect and support local initiatives that preserve climate and animal habitats but also the indigenous cultures of these Polynesian islands! Although now American, let's explore and understand the deep roots of Hawaii by visiting and supporting a local heiau or temple, which we will then join our local team to help restore, preserving this beautiful culture for many years to come!

After the culture comes the adventure, so strap on your hiking boots to visit some of Hawaii's best nature trails. If hiking is not your thing, then perhaps you would like to join the local community and discover traditional ways of farming and cooking.

After lunch, we join back together as we embark on a refreshing local waterfall trek! Don't forget to pack your bikini as there is no better way to clean the skin and the soul! Then it's back home for a team dinner, and much needed free time (or sleep) after a full day!

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

DAY 4 (TUE): Kihei to Paia

Day 4 sees our intrepid group volunteer at one of Hawaii’s rare and sacred landscapes, Haleakala National Park. This special place vibrates with stories of ancient and modern Hawaiian culture and protects the bond between the land and its people. The park also cares for endangered species, some of which exist nowhere else.

Together we explore and support this special place - renew your spirit amid stark volcanic landscapes and sub-tropical rain forest with an unforgettable hike through the back-country and a hike to the breathtaking volcanic crater!

This is a full day of awe and admiration! Where we also switch up the location and head to the historic plantation village of Paia.

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

DAY 5 (WED): Paia

Let’s connect with our marine side again as we spend a day turtle watching and snorkeling around the islands stunning lagoons and ocean vistas!

Full-on day! Don’t forget the sunscreen (but let’s do our bit and make it eco-friendly sun cream!)

Meals included: Breakfast & Lunch

DAY 6 (THU): Paia to Hana

Today we say goodbye to the stunning village of Paia as we slowly make our way along Maui's rugged eastern coastline to the peaceful town of Hana, considered one of the last unspoiled Hawaiian frontiers.

Along the way, we make sure we get our adventure fixed by going to some of Maui's most spectacular waterfalls and famed volcanic beaches!

We will also be embracing the local culture by staying the night at homestays where you will meet some of the most fascinating characters of Polynesia (and that's not just the Bamboo Hawaii Team)

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

DAY 7 (FRI): Hana

On the rugged Hana coast, along the far eastern shores of the Hawaiian island of Maui, Kahanu Garden grows in splendid isolation, nestled in one of the largest native Hala (Pandanus) forests in the Islands. Plant collections from the Pacific Islands are the focus here, particularly plants of value to the Hawaiian people as well as other cultures of Polynesia,

Micronesia and Melanesia. Kahanu Garden is situated in the storied land of Honoma'ele and home to Pi'ilanihale Heiau, a massive lava-rock structure that is believed to be the largest ancient human-made structure in Polynesia. This awe-inspiring cultural site in the garden is registered as a National Historic Landmark.

Visitors to Kahanu Garden will learn about the cultural relationships between people and these remarkable plants that were transported around the Pacific on ancient voyaging canoes. Among the different ethnobotanical collections at Kahanu Garden is the world's most extensive collection of breadfruit cultivars, which serves as a germplasm repository for this important South Pacific food crop.

After this awe-inspiring cultural excursion, we again embrace nature through our hiking boots! This time a stunning trail through Instagram photo-worthy Pipiwai or the Hoapili trail

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

DAY 8 (SAT): Hana to Kahului

It’s time to venture to our 4th and final location on magnificent Maui, the hub of this great island, Kahului. We will make sure to stop along the way and picnic.

In the afternoon we will get stuck into a project, depending on the needs of the local community at the time,

What better way to end our give-back day with a beautiful Farewell dinner where we can laugh and cry and share the love of what we have experienced together!

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

DAY 9 (SUN): Departure - Kahului

As with any Bamboo tour, it never really is the end, but more just the beginning of your adventure with us! You can continue your Polynesian understanding by visiting Tahiti, a short flight away! If not, we say Aloha and ‘a hiki i ka manawa hou’ or until next time!

Meals included: Breakfast

FAQ

In short - anything that’s not on the "What's included?" list in the info pack! The main things you’ll absolutely need to get that aren’t included are:

International flights - we have people join us from all over the world so we leave these flexible so you can choose the departure airport and airline that suits you best.

Travel Insurance - you can choose your own travel insurance, or we can organise this for you. You can find details on the travel insurance here and will be able to add this onto your booking when you pay your program fee.

Visas – depending on the passport you hold you may need to get a visa before you travel. Please see below for more info on visas.

You need to book a flight that lands into to the major airport in Maui, Kahului Airport (OGG), on the Saturday that the tour starts. If you arrive before your Saturday start date, you will need additional accommodation. We can book this for you, at your own expense and you will just need to make your own way there from the airport. This tour will end on the Sunday 8 days later in Kahului, so you need to make your departure arrangements from there that day.
Depending on your country of citizenship you may be entitled to a 30-day visa-free entry into the USA. A quick Google search will tell you whether you need a visa or not.
This largely depends on you. Lots of breakfasts throughout the tour are included, along with a couple of dinners. The rest of the meals are up to you, and if you are having local meals it will cost a couple of dollars, if you prefer western food, it will be more depending on where you eat.
This depends on your home country and your vaccination history. You should visit a local travel clinic and see what they recommend.
